Just saw this for the first time.
Most slip and falls are because of wet floors. Matting prevents wet floors and slipping on wet floors.
But ! it is also possible to trip over the mats. If your mats don’t lay down just right and people are constantly flipping the corners up as they walk over them, you might want to google ANSI B101.6 – 2012 – “Standard Guide for Commercial Matting …………”
Here’s this years Services Magazine article also describing in very succinct terms the right way to mat an entry, as well as describing the new ANSI standard.
